This
series of lithographs, “Invisible Cities” by
Italo Calvino A source of inspiration, is the first time
I have worked from drawings. Prints in the previous centuries
were used to reproduce other works of art in order to spread
ideas.
In the
beginning, I thought this series would be easy; I had the content
in front of me. But, not only were there problems related to
the significant change in scale (the lithos are smaller) but
the change in medium from soft charcoal tones to high contrast
prints and textures created many more decisions.
After ten minutes
of working on the first print, I put the drawing away. Capturing
the essence of the drawings was my intention, not reproduction.
The dark margin around the prints refers to the 19th century
commercial prints when this was common. The words under the prints
are paraphrased descriptions of the various cities. |
