In Purgatory, there
is movement and communication between the souls or shades. Dante
receives directions as he climbs the mountain. The souls or shades
have a future: Paradise. There is a joyful chorus when a soul
leaves for heaven. This atmosphere is my design guide for Purgatory
in both the text design and the etchings. The type is not set
in blocks, but in cursive units with the two languages paired.
The etchings are sometimes embossed behind the text thus expanding
and uniting the two pages.
